To Wendy's Championship for Children Tournament,
I wanted to write to you and express my sincerest gratitude for your effort on behalf of my
daughter and the thousands of other children in the country who are victims of pediatric
My daughter, Avalon Havan, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia when she was
17 months old. We're 11 months into treatment, with 16 months left to go. Avalon is the
reason I found out about your work.
Avalon appeared on posters for a fundraising event for Children's Hospital in June of this year.
We have dedicated our family to helping Children's as often as possible, and have become
well-aquainted with the Foundation staff. One of them was kind enough to let us know that
your organization chose Avalon's posters for use during this year's tournament. Of course I
was intrigued - and went searching for more information on the web.
What I found was astonishing! As a long time Columbus resident, I knew about the tournament,
but had no idea that its purpose was to raise money for pediatric cancer. Your efforts have
been amazing on behalf of our cause! I applaud each and every one of you for your
dedication and professionalism.
I realize that you may see this tournament as just a part of your daily job. I know the untold
hours that go into planning such an enormous, nationally-recognized event. What I want you to
know, is that your work is life-altering. Every dollar you raise helps those of us in the fight. I
appreciate your work, and I want all of you to know you are making a difference in people's
lives. Too often in life, people focus on the negative, greedy aspects of the world. Your
company, your work - you prove that good does exist in the world. Please know how much we
parents value your efforts to support our children.
You are welcome to get to know the face on the posters a little better. Avalon has a website,
www.avalonsarmyofangels.com . We welcome you to walk our path with us in "Avalon's Story".
I've tried to be as honest as possilbe, as I chronicle this journey. Sometimes we cry, but more
often...we laugh. Children of cancer are children - first and foremost. They still play, do goofy
things, and bring a sparkle to a room that can't be denied. If you'd like to see one of the little
people you are working for - please feel free to "join us" on our journey. You are
welcome...and you are appreciated!
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Our life is an open book, as we
attempt to make this cause personal and tangible to those blessed to never be touched by
cancer. I will help you in any way I can. Again...thank you. You'll never know what you mean

Your e-mailed message did more around here than you will ever know. For the past several
weeks our staff of eight has worked 14-plus-hour days with no "off days" and little rest as we try
to make this event "perfect" in all ways possible(and we have two more weeks to go). The old
line about "not seeing the trees through the forest" certainly applies as the phones ring off the
hook and everyone wants everything RIGHT NOW!
Your message was copied by our staff and we all put it up near our desks. Our thoughts are
with your family & Avalon and if you wish to come out to the tournament just call me. Please
know that your message today lifted the spirits of some very tired people and put it all back into
perspective for us--please stay in touch and thanks again.

I just sent your letter to everyone associated with the tournament. Through my tears, I read it
and wish you all the best with Avalon’s treatment.
I spend two weeks away from my 19month old son and 3 year old daughter while we run the
event these next two weeks, which I thought was such a hardship until I read your email – it
really puts things back in perspective…..I can’t even imagine what you have been through, but
know that at Children’s – your daughter is receiving the best treatment possible.
Your family and all the children at Children’s are the reason I do what I do....
I hope you will find time to come out watch the event….if you would like tickets, please call me
for more information.
Thank you so much for sending your story…..its truly inspiring.
Avalon and your family will be in my prayers.

You made my day, as well! I'm glad I am able to help all of you walk the final mile. I know how
exhausting and frustrating this event must be, I just wanted everyone there to know how valued
your work is.
I never wrote because I wanted anything. Funny thing is, I've never even played golf.
However, three times is the charm, as the saying goes. Three of you have been kind enough
to invite us to the event. If it is acceptable, my husband, Avalon, and I would love to join you for
the dinner honoring the doctor from Children's. We would be able to thank all of you in person
and to thank a wonderful man for his life's work for our kids. I can't imagine a better evening...
I'll call the office today, to find out details. I also want you to know that I meant what I said, if
you ever need a volunteer, speaker, or general cheerleader - my services are free and
cheerful! I appreciate your tireless work, and look forward to thanking you in person.
